Scalawag is approaching its one year anniversary. I originally started this blog because I was affected by the straight-line storm of June 2023, which knocked power out in Shreveport for ten days. The local news had not covered one human aspect of it, which was the impact it had on those who are susceptible to heat-related illness. By making a simple request for public data to LDH, I uncovered that over a hundred people had been hospitalized for hyperthermia in North Louisiana following the storm, a result of the unpreparedness of SWEPCO and the region in general to natural disasters. No local media outlet reported this besides me.

While I have veered in the direction of punditry, I still see what I’m doing as a kind of journalism, and in the last year I have started to develop my journalistic voice. I’d like to continue to write about politics in Louisiana, uncover stories which the local media have neglected, and provide coverage of current events from a working class perspective.

If you enjoy my writing, and if you have it on you, please visit my ko-fi link and buy me a coffee. It will help cover hosting costs and help me cover the class struggle in the Arklatex.
